The concept of panism has ancient origins, although its philosophy truly flourished during the period of Decadence. While its etymology remains uncertain, the term is linked to the ancient Greek πᾶν (pàn, “all”), which by assonance recalls the mythological figure of Pan, whose name derives from Πάν (paein, “to graze”).
According to Greek tradition, Pan was the deity of forests, nature, and the rural world, depicted as a satyr. For this reason, over time, Pan became the archetype of panism: the meeting point and fusion between the human and the non-human.
Panism expresses a feeling of joyful communion between the natural and the human element, where the individual is immersed in the external world, merging with the totality of nature.
In this series of works, inspired by the cycle Esperienze Paniche (Panical Experiences), I sought to represent a kind of “panical adventure.”
The subject, immersed in vegetal totality, moves within that throbbing nature. Everything trembles with him; every movement redraws a new landscape. Each work corresponds to a sequence of instants, like frames of an action unfolding—a real and perceptive succession that, through its flow, gives shape to the most authentic Avventura Panica (Panical Adventure).
